Retired Lawyer Offers $2M Scholarship to Ukrainian Students: Students’ Reaction

Philanthropist Sam Rose, has provided $2 million for scholarships to Dickinson College that will pay all costs for five students from war-torn Ukraine to study in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Rose’s generosity will cover tuition for all four years and other basic needs during the academic year. The scholarship recipients were overwhelmed with emotion upon hearing the news from Dickinson College president, John Jones.

Opportunities for Five Students in Ukraine

The Sam Rose ’58 International Scholarship will give five students from Ukraine the chance for a future they may not have dreamed possible. The scholarship is an all-expenses-paid college education for these students to study at a college in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The scholarship will cover tuition for all four years of study, including costs of textbooks, dining and living expenses, travel expenses, health insurance, and other basic needs through the academic year. Students will also receive support during summer and winter breaks.

Dickinson College’s Legacy of Supporting Students Around the World

Dickinson College has a long history of supporting students around the world who face strife including through the conflict. Student Support Fund assists international students whose financial need has increased because of war in their homeland. More than 1,800 students are currently being supported through scholarships and grants, and more than 3,642 donors have contributed to making this possible, with donations of all sizes helping to change lives through Dickinson. Sam Rose has contributed $17.5 million to the Campaign for Scholarships.

Dickinson College president, John Jones, said, “Thanks to Sam’s incredible generosity, we are able to offer these students a world-class education away from the war in Ukraine. We are excited to meet and learn from our new Ukrainian students, who will help us build a more interesting and engaging campus community.”

This scholarship will give students the opportunity to pursue their dreams and further their education, regardless of their financial situations. It’s inspiring to see philanthropists like Sam Rose making a difference in the world and helping to create a brighter future for those who face challenges beyond their control.
